Orange County Resident Completes Unique Externship Program at Douglass College
New Brunswick, NJ (March 27, 2008) – Ashley Morris, of Orange County, VA recently completed the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College (AADC) Extern Program at Douglass College, the public women’s college at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The AADC Extern Program provides Douglass students with real-world experience in the field of work they have chosen or are considering for possible careers and/or graduate study.
Established by the AADC more than three decades ago, the AADC Extern Program enables Douglass students to try a career on for size. Ashley participated in the AADC Extern Program with New Jersey Protection and Advocacy, Inc. Sponsors, who are typically Douglass alumnae, provide a unique hands-on experience for students. Each sponsor serves as a role model and mentor. The AADC Extern Program lasts one or two weeks and takes place during the student’s winter or spring break. In some cases students work with their sponsor during both breaks.
“We’re very proud of Ashley and the other Douglass students who have completed the AADC Extern Program,” said Sheila Kelly Hampton, president, Associate Alumnae of Douglass College. “We provide this opportunity for Douglass College students to help prepare them for the world of work. From science labs, to corporate settings, to classrooms, Douglass students are graduating with hands-on experience that they can share with potential employers.”
Douglass College is the largest undergraduate women’s college in the United States and the only women’s college on a public research university’s campus—the best of two worlds; that’s the Douglass Difference. With a strong sense of tradition, a global vision, and a history of supporting women who choose to lead in fields from which women have traditionally been underrepresented, Douglass College is about the character of women's leadership, as much as it is about its importance and expansion.
Douglass has an enrollment of nearly 2,500 students and more than 35,000 alumnae. The Douglass campus is home to a consortium of centers and institutes devoted to the advancement of women. Through mission courses and co-curricular programming, young women are encouraged to take on leadership roles, pursue non-traditional fields, and to seek out opportunities that will enhance their development. Douglass College is where women learn to lead and meet new challenges in whatever they pursue.

Recent lecturers in the series have included legendary researcher Jane Goodall, former White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers, Nobel Laureate Jody Williams, and Pulitzer-Prize-Winning Author Frank McCourt.
The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College (AADC) provides ongoing financial, programming, and communications support to Douglass College, her students and her alumnae, and encourages and promotes the unique educational experience and leadership opportunities at Douglass College, which are inherent in a women's college. Established by the Class of 1922, the college's first graduating class, the AADC today represents the interests of more than 35,000 graduates of Douglass College and the former New Jersey College for Women.
