Living ‘Happily Ever After’ in Retirement
Union County real estate broker gives tips for the golden years

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ (January 22, 2008) – While planning to retire, one of the most important choices facing an individual is where to live in their post-working years. Choosing the right community and property is one of the most challenging – and important – decisions made before retirement.

“This is a significant decision, which requires time to internally reflect and prioritize on what matters to you,” says Mike Del Duca, Prudential New Jersey Properties’ New Providence office manager. “Preparation is essential for making the right decisions before embarking on a rewarding retirement experience.”

With over twenty years of real estate industry experience, Del Duca has worked with hundreds of Union County residents find a dream home for their golden years.

“Planning a happy retirement starts with just asking some basic questions about your lifestyle,” says Del Duca, who suggests thinking about three key elements that can bring about a “happily ever after”:

No Need to Leave: For many individuals, leaving their current home behind isn’t appealing. With little or no mortgage left on a house, forgoing a change of address saves on moving costs, a new financing plan, deposits, monthly community fees, while drastically cutting the price of retirement.

Stay Close or Move Far? : Whether its moving to a different region or moving to another home close by, start reviewing options based on general climate, seasonal changes, lifestyle, and proximity to family and friends. When the locations have been narrowed down to a few possible destinations, compare them on a range of factors including financial, housing costs, climate, personal safety, public services, potential employment and social environment. A region’s climate will invariably play a key role in how you spend your leisure time during retirement.

Permanent Vacation: For families with vacation homes, the easiest thing to do is just change your address. “Many people choose to live where they play,” says Del Duca. “If a lake-side lifestyle appeals to you, there are some beautiful, viable options in the northern New Jersey area that are truly becoming ideal retirement areas.” If golfing or other recreational opportunities are more appealing, there are plenty of communities that accommodate that lifestyle.

“Narrowing the options down is just the beginning of this process,” says Del Duca. “Research is crucial to making the best decision possible about future retirement plans. You may want to start with the Internet, where there is a wealth of information.”

The Internet puts important facts right at your fingertips, including crime statistics, public services, transportation options, quality of life, cultural opportunities, weather and the potential job market – just in case a second career is right for you.

For an expert opinion, speak with a real estate professional regarding home prices, taxes, average living costs, and other options regarding retirement. Utilize other resources, such as your local library, trade associations – like the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) – local organizations in the areas of interest, visitor bureaus, chambers of commerce, local newspapers, and vacation guides.

Information on a career in real estate, the local market, and access to all real-estate related services is available by contacting Del Duca at the Prudential New Jersey Properties New Providence office, 1260 Springfield Avenue, at (908) 464-5200.
