Training a Key Ingredient for Real Estate Sales Success
Prudential New Jersey Properties’ devotes one quarter of new HQ facility to its training program

Somerset, NJ (October 9, 2003) -- Most real estate companies - in fact, most organizations in general - offer their members some type of training program. But few take the process as seriously as Prudential New Jersey Properties.

As testament to this commitment, when the company opened its new 14,000-square-foot headquarters facility in Somerset County in February, fully 3,500 square feet were exclusively devoted to an advanced training suite.

“One quarter of all the office space in our new headquarters was set aside for our Training Center,” explains Bruce Graham, Prudential New Jersey Properties’ training director. “I think this illustrates the extremely high value we place on training our sales professionals. We’re convinced that an excellent training program is directly connected to outstanding sales performance.”

The company’s Training Center is truly state-of-the-art. Among the many components in this expansive suite - which is enhanced by a broad view of a magnificent, campus-like location- is an array of high-tech communication and presentation equipment.

Graham and others utilize these devices specifically to augment and improve various educational sessions. For the company, the cornerstone of the training program is the nine-day Academy Sales Training course, which is presented to new sales associates - both experienced real estate professionals and those who’ve just recently earned their license - approximately 10 times per year. Topics covered include “Negotiating,” “Professionally Showing a Home,” “Preparing a Comparative Market Analysis” and “Helping to Find the Right Price.”

“Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, we refer to our Academy Sales Training as ‘boot camp,’” Graham says. “But in reality, our agents enjoy this program immensely. We begin with several days of basic company orientation, then transition into a hands-on, practical introduction to real estate sales. In a nine-day course, they learn things they’ll use for the remainder of their careers.”

Aside from helping to boost the efficiency of individual sales agents, the Prudential New Jersey Properties training program has become increasingly necessary because of the diverse backgrounds of individuals now entering the real estate field.

“A range of relatively recent economic and social factors has led to a tremendously varied group of people earning their real estate licenses and joining our company,” Graham explains. “They’re predominantly very well educated, and often have years of experience in other fields. But they realize they need the targeted, specialized training that can lead to success in real estate sales. We show them how to integrate their experience and success from previous careers into significant advantages with which to build their new career. They are coming to us because we provide the very best training available in the industry.”

Even after sales associates complete the company’s Academy Sales Training program, their training is hardly finished.

“We constantly stress to our sales agents - including those with years of experience --that additional training options are always available,” says William O. Keleher, Jr., chairman and CEO of Prudential New Jersey Properties. “Each of the individual sales offices provide various programs, and for newer agents there are many opportunities for mentoring with veteran professionals. In addition, the headquarters Training Center is in the process of creating more advanced training sessions.

“It all comes down to one, simple truth - the more you know, the more successful you can be.”
