Spring Cleaning for a More Appealing Home
Prudential New Jersey Properties Office Manager explains how to spruce up your house for spring
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ (March 27, 2006) – With a bounty of sunny weather and new foliage, many of us choose to spend our spring outdoors. But as Michael Del Duca, manager of Prudential New Jersey Properties’ New Providence office explains, spring is a great time to catch up on some chores that were overlooked during winter months.
“With the summer coming up and everyone getting outdoors, its no surprise that real estate activity swings into high gear in spring,” says Del Duca. “If you are considering putting your home on the market, or even if you aren’t planning on selling your home, now is a perfect time to do some maintenance to preserve your home's value and help avoid major repairs.”
With a few tricks and a bit of elbow grease, your home can be transformed in only one weekend. See a few tips below:
Outdoor Maintenance:
· Look for sagging gutters, loose window frames or
siding and missing roof shingles. Don’t forget to look for water damage under the eaves.
· Check gutters for clogging or damage and schedule an appointment for cleaning. Clear away fallen branches and leaves. Prune shrubs and trees.
· Test your sprinkler system and replace old washers or sprinkler heads.
· Complete annual deck maintenance, including conditioning, hammering and replacing any loose or broken nails, and replace any broken boards or rails. Use a power washer to remove dirt and mildew from the wood, and apply an all-weather sealer or stain.
· Repair any broken fence boards and paint or seal them as needed.
· Lastly, wash all exterior windows, screens and windowsills.
Interior Maintenance:
· Clean fan blades using mild soapy water. Check the central air-conditioning unit for debris and vacuum the main condenser coil on top of the unit. Check the operating condition of window air-conditioning units; remove and wash filters in mild soapy water.
· Make sure all exhaust fans and vents are clean and clear. Don't forget to remove the lint buildup from the clothes dryer vent.
· Clean the fireplace, making sure to sweep ashes carefully into the ash pit or into a dustpan.
· Don’t forget to replace the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Promptly schedule repairs for all tasks you can't perform yourself.
