“Going Green” saves homeowners money on utility bills
New Providence broker offers advice on eco-friendly home products
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ (May 5, 2008) – The “green movement” has become a culture phenomenon. With the impact this movement has made, homeowners are seeking inexpensive ways to make their home more environmentally friendly.
“A giant misconception about eco-friendly home products is that it can be very expensive, which is completely untrue,” explains Mike Del Duca, manager of Prudential New Jersey Properties’ New Providence office. “Not only do they cost as much as other products, but energy efficient products also reduce monthly utility bills.”
Del Duca suggests the following reduce a property’s carbon footprint, while saving money:
Energy Efficient Appliances: Today’s consumer appliances market is flooded with ENERGY STAR-qualified products – from dishwashers to air conditioning units. The U.S. Department of Environmental Protection Agency estimated that ENERGY STAR appliances saved Americans $16 billion on utility bills in 2007. Even smaller products make a difference. By replacing five incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs, homeowners can save $100 per year on their electric bill, while using approximately 75 percent less energy.
Regulate Indoor Temperature: Adjusting a property’s thermostat by just one degree can significantly lower electrical costs. Homeowners can also program heating and cooling appliances to output while no one is home or at night. Cracks and air leaks are not only unattractive, but represent cash seeping from your doors and windows. By caulking gaps and cracks with silicone sealants, homeowners can decrease a home’s heating and air conditioning bill.
Water Conservation: Approximately 27 percent of household’s water supply goes directly to the toilet – literally. To keep the water bill low, replace old and outdated bathroom amenities with low-flow toilets and showers. Make sure all of a property’s water dispensing fixtures are in proper working order, and not leaking. A slow-dripping faucet can waste as much as 2,400 gallons of water per year.
“Going green does not have to be costly,” says Del Duca. “Making minor adjustments to a property – and the homeowner lifestyle – can help save money and decrease of energy consumption.”
Information on a career in real estate, the local market, and access to all real-estate related services is available by contacting Del Duca at the Prudential New Jersey Properties New Providence office, 1260 Springfield Avenue, at (908) 464-5200.
