With New Jersey’s Population Steadily “Graying,” Realtors Get Special Training to Meet Seniors’ Needs

SOMERSET, NJ (August 5, 2004) – As New Jersey’s population steadily shifts to an older demographic, Realtors are working hard to address and accommodate the specific needs of the rapidly increasing number of senior citizens.

According to the 2000 U.S. census, 13.2 percent of the Garden State’s population is now 65 or older, compared to the nationwide figure of only 12.4 percent. This state percentage translates into approximately 1.14 million New Jersey residents at least 65 years of age.

“To be a truly full-service real estate company, you absolutely must address the demands of the senior market segment,” explains William O. Keleher, chairman and CEO of Somerset, NJ-based Prudential New Jersey Properties. “Older citizens are playing an increasingly influential role in this state’s real estate marketplace, so we’re doing everything necessary to ensure that our sales agents are trained to help them meet their goals.”

The Prudential New Jersey Properties strategy for providing its sales associates with specialized training for working with seniors focuses on participation in a special instructional program from the Senior Advantage Real Estate Council®. All sales agents who successfully complete the two-day program receive the designation of Seniors Real

Estate Specialist® (SRES®), identifying them as being fully qualified to help older citizens make informed decisions about selling a family home, buying rental property, managing capital gains and the estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community, and other issues.

The initial group of Prudential New Jersey Properties sales associates to participate in the Senior Advantage Real Estate Council’s program have now successfully completed the course, earning their individual SRES designations.

“Obviously, it won’t be possible for our SRES designated agents to anticipate every situation or circumstance related to seniors selling or purchasing real estate,” Keleher says. “What we’re trying to do by making this course available is provide a good, strong foundation of understanding. We want our clients to realize we’re committed to quality service, and we’re working hard to meet their needs.”
