PARSIPPANY, NJ (January 10, 2008) – Ninety college students – they’re quite a group.
This month, Parsippany-based Success Communications Group marks the five-year anniversary of its public relations internship program – and exactly 90 collegians from 30 colleges and universities in 10 different states have participated. Emphasizing interactive training, the program provides future public relations leaders with real-world experiences within a public relations agency environment.
“We are passionate about our craft and we're always eager for an opportunity to share our knowledge and know-how with young people preparing to enter the field,” says Michael Cherenson, APR, the executive vice president of public relations at Success and the 2008 chair-elect of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
“Continuing and growing this program has been extremely beneficial to both the students and our agency. This working relationship fosters an environment where teaching and learning are an integral part of each business day.”
Established in January 2003, Success’ PR internship program enables interns to work directly with the agency’s professional staff and senior management on relevant projects, thus supplementing knowledge they’ve gained in university classrooms. In total, Success interns have earned 153 college credits based on their efforts at the agency.
Throughout the program’s five-year history, the diverse group of students have come from some of the nation’s top collegiate public relations programs, including Penn State University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Syracuse University, the University of Maryland, and Villanova University. The internships include a paid stipend and are offered in both the fall and spring semesters, as well as during summer and winter recesses.
A former intern, Penn State graduate Kaitlyn Sweeney, is now an assistant account executive at Success and serves as coordinator for the program in which she once participated.
“The experiences gained during my internship at Success paved the way for me to work in the position I do today,” Sweeney says. “I’m committed to continuing the atmosphere of interaction and learning that I was engaged in as an intern.”
